Dishwasher Not Draining (Water Left in the Bottom)

Quick answer: Clean the dishwasher filter, then check the drain hose for kinks, clean the air gap if you have one, and run the garbage disposal. Just installed or new disposal? The disposal’s knockout plug may still be in place. If all are clear, check the drain pump, check valve and piston/nut assembly (PartSelect).

GE’s own fault-code table points to the air gap, the hose and the disposer for drain codes (C1, FTD/F56).

Test order: easiest & free first

  1. Clean the filter and sumpFREE · 10 min
Remove the lower rack and the filter at the bottom of the tub; rinse it and clear debris from the sump (Electrolux, GE).
  2. Run the garbage disposalFREE · 1 min
Many dishwashers drain into the disposal. GE says to run the disposer to clean it out.
  3. New disposal? Remove the knockout plugFREE · 15 min
New disposals ship with a plug in the dishwasher inlet. InSinkErator: disconnect the drain hose, tap the plug out with a screwdriver, remove it from inside the disposal, and reconnect with a hose clamp.
  4. Check the drain hoseFREE · 10 min
Look under the sink for kinks or crushing. Whirlpool says new installs should have a high loop or air gap.
  5. Clean the air gapFREE · 5 min
If there’s a small cap by the faucet, pull it off and clear debris (GE).
  6. Reset powerFREE · 1 min
GE: for C3 (will not drain), switch off at the breaker about 30 seconds, then reset.
  7. Check the drain pumpINSPECT / MULTIMETER
PartSelect: check the pump inlet and outlet for obstructions and verify the pump gets power. Some models use a separate drain pump; others use the main pump with a drain solenoid and flapper.
  8. Check valve / piston & nut assemblyINSPECT
Under the sump cover on some models. PartSelect: the piston should move freely and seal in the down position.
  9. Belt, timer or control$$
PartSelect also lists the belt (older belt-driven pumps), timer and drain hose itself.
⚠ Safety: Unplug the dishwasher or switch off its breaker before reaching into the sump or removing panels. Watch for broken glass in the filter. Water may be hot after a cycle.
