GE Dishwasher C4 Error Code (Float Switch / Clogged Sump)

Quick answer: GE says C4 means the machine filled twice after a power failure, the float switch is stuck or failed, or the drain or sump is clogged. Touch Start then Cancel/Reset, tap the float cover to free the float, and clear debris from the sump. If it keeps coming back, the float (flood) switch may need replacing.

Not all codes appear on all GE models. Work through the steps in order — the free checks come first.

Test order: easiest & free first

  1. Touch Start, then Cancel/ResetFREE · 1 min
GE’s first step for C4. If the power went out mid-fill, this alone may clear it.
  2. Reset the powerFREE · 2 min
GE says disconnecting power to the dishwasher for a minute or two sometimes clears a fault code. Use the breaker.
  3. Tap the float coverFREE · 1 min
GE: the float cover is the plastic piece that looks like an upside-down cup in the front-left corner of the tub floor. Tap it to un-stick the float. (GE gives the same step for C5, pump-out time too short.)
  4. Clear debris from the sumpFREE · 10 min
GE: check the sump area at the back bottom of the tub (it looks like an upside-down silverware basket) for debris that can clog it.
  5. Check the flood float (GDF, GDT, PDT, CDT, DDT, ADT, ZDT models)FREE · 10 min
GE says these models have a flood float in the sump. Remove the Ultra Fine and Fine filters, lift the float straight up and out, make sure it is straight (not bent or damaged) and the sump is free of debris, then put it back the same way.
  6. Check the drain pathFREE · 10 min
Since GE lists a clogged drain as a C4 cause, check the drain hose, air gap and disposer (see Dishwasher not draining). PartSelect adds that a drain hose that’s too low or kinked can interfere with water level detection or cause siphoning.
  7. Replace the float / flood switchPART
If the float moves freely and the sump is clean but C4 returns, the switch under the float may have failed. On newer models PartSelect’s steps are: power off, remove the lower rack, lower spray arm and filters, remove two 1/4 in. hex screws, lift out the switch and unplug its harness. See part numbers below.
  8. Still there? Call for service$$$
GE says to contact service if the problem persists. PartSelect notes that if the switch, valve and pump test fine, the control board is the likely cause.
⚠ Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and shut off the water before removing filters, the float switch or the lower access panel. Have towels ready for water left in the sump.
