GFCI Outlet Won’t Reset

Quick answer: A GFCI will not reset if there is no power on the circuit (Leviton), so check the breaker first. Then unplug everything from the GFCI and the outlets it protects and press RESET again (Eaton). If TEST or RESET still doesn’t work, ESFI says the GFCI should be replaced — have a qualified electrician do it.
⚠ Stop and call a licensed electrician if:
- TEST or RESET don’t work — the GFCI needs replacing (ESFI).
- It won’t reset even with everything unplugged, pointing to a circuit or device issue (Eaton).
- Burning odor, warm or discolored wall plates, or crackling/buzzing from outlets (ESFI).
- A newly installed GFCI that won’t reset may have line and load wires reversed (Leviton, Eaton) — a wiring job for an electrician.

Leviton: a GFCI won’t reset with no power on the circuit. If the breaker is tripped, unplug loads and reset it fully OFF then ON (see our tripped breaker guide). - Unplug everything, then press RESETFREE · 5 min
Eaton: an active ground fault can stop a GFCI resetting. Remove everything plugged into it and the outlets downstream, then try RESET again. If it resets now, the fault is in something downstream — find it before resetting again. - Read the indicator lightFREE
On Leviton GFCIs, a red light (solid or flashing) means: press TEST, then RESET; if red continues or it won’t reset, replace the GFCI. Light off = tripped or no power. On Eaton GFCIs, the tripped indicator goes out with an audible click when the reset succeeds. Check your outlet’s brand instructions. - Test it monthly once it worksFREE · 1 min
ESFI: press RESET, plug in a nightlight, press TEST (the light should go off), then RESET (it should come back on). Leviton also recommends testing monthly. - If TEST or RESET doesn’t work, replace it — with an electricianCALL A PRO
ESFI: if test or reset don’t work, the GFCI should be replaced, using a GFCI certified by an OSHA-recognized testing lab from a reputable retailer. Eaton notes that if it won’t reset with everything removed, there may be a circuit issue or a problem with the device itself.
