Quick answer: OE means the washer can’t drain (LG). Check the drain hose for kinks, clogs or freezing and that it isn’t too high, clean the drain pump filter, then run a Spin Only cycle and listen for the pump. If the pump hums but OE returns, run Tub Clean and use less detergent; if the pump makes no sound, LG says the unit needs repair service.

LG’s newer error code list groups OE with E03/E21. On LG top loaders, LG says OE shows if the washer can’t drain for 13 minutes.

Test order: easiest & free first

  1. Check the drain hoseFREE · 5 min
Behind the washer: not kinked, pinched against the wall, or installed too high (LG).
  2. Check your house drainFREE · 5 min
Remove the hose from the standpipe and run a spin to see if it drains (LG).
  3. Frozen? Thaw itFREE · —
In cold weather LG says to pour warm water into the tub and wait for the pump to thaw.
  4. Run a Spin Only test and listenFREE · 2 min
Front load (LG): Power on, set Spin Speed to High, press Start. A hum during the first 15 seconds means the pump motor is running. Top load: use Special Use → Spin Only.
  5. Clean the drain pump filter (front load)FREE · 15 min
Unplug. Open the bottom-left service panel, unclip the small drain tube and drain into a shallow pan, then twist the filter counter-clockwise to remove and brush it clean. Refit firmly clockwise (LG).
  6. Run Tub Clean; reduce detergentFREE · 1 hr+
LG: excess suds create air pockets the pump can’t remove.
  7. No hum = pump or controlSERVICE
LG says if you can’t hear the hum, the drain pump isn’t working and the unit needs repair service.
⚠ Safety: Unplug before opening the filter panel. LG warns residual water may be hot — let it cool and have a pan and towels ready.
