Fruit Flies and Drain Flies

Quick answer: Small flies come from where they breed: overripe produce, trash, recycling and the gunk inside drains. Flies lay eggs in moist organic material (UC IPM), so removing and cleaning that source is the fix; traps only catch the adults.
⚠ Safety first:
- Try non-chemical steps first: remove food, water and shelter and seal entry points (EPA IPM; UC IPM).
- If you use a pesticide, read and follow the label; the label is the law (EPA). Never use products labeled for outdoor use indoors.
- Keep kids and pets away from treated areas and baits; store pesticides in their original containers, up high and locked (EPA).
- Poison emergency: call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (U.S.).
