Quick answer: Most cleaning products are safe around dogs and cats when used exactly as labeled; keep pets out until surfaces are dry and stored products locked away (ASPCA; AVMA). Birds are extra sensitive to fumes (ASPCA; AVMA). Before buying a plant, look it up on the ASPCA toxic and non-toxic plants list. Lilies are highly toxic to cats (AVMA). If you think your pet ate something toxic, call your vet or ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 (a consultation fee may apply) (ASPCA; AVMA).
⚠ Safety first:

Steps: easiest & free first

  1. Follow the labelFREE
If it says keep pets away until dry, do it (AVMA). Never mix cleaning products.
  2. Dilute and rinse bleachFREE
Properly diluted bleach, rinsed and aired out, is not expected to harm pets when cleaning toys and cages (ASPCA).
  3. Dry before pets returnFREE
Let carpet shampoo and enzyme cleaners dry before pets walk or lick there (ASPCA).
  4. Skip essential oils where pets roamFREE
Cats are especially sensitive to essential oils (ASPCA). Don’t use them where pets have access unless your vet says it’s okay.
  5. Lock up laundry and dryer sheetsFREE
Fabric softener sheets can cause mouth ulcers and, if enough are eaten, a blockage (ASPCA).
  6. Look up every plantFREE
Use the ASPCA list by name, since photos can differ. Even non-toxic plants can cause vomiting if eaten (ASPCA).
  7. Common ones to keep awayFREE
Certain lilies (cats), sago palm, lily of the valley, oleander, azaleas and tulip or narcissus bulbs are on AVMA’s list of common dangers. Pothos, philodendron, peace lily and snake plant (mother-in-law’s tongue) can cause stomach upset (AVMA).
⚠ When to call a pro: your pet ate something toxic, is hurt, or has sudden accidents or behavior changes (see a vet first; AVMA and Humane World both say to rule out medical causes); urine soaked into carpet padding or drywall; deep gouges in floors, doors or trim; and anything that needs drilling, replacing or refinishing in a rental. Tell your landlord in writing before you try a repair that changes the unit. Renting? See what you can fix vs. call your landlord.
💡 Prevent it: Using bug sprays or rodent poison? Read the label first; dog flea products with permethrin must never be used on cats (AVMA). See ants and mice for safer-first steps.
